Later Dome Appearance

Closure Sequence

2002	Clearance and demolition were under way on parts of the seafront entertainment site.	The Bear described this as “rehearsal without walls.”
2003	The Rotunda site was put up for sale. Rides began to disappear in stages and the remaining attraction traded in reduced form.	A forwarding address was requested for applause.
2005	Contemporary notes describe the Dome amusements as the only attraction still open.	The Bear counted this as an extended residency.
Feb. 2007	The Dome arcade closed.	Final token refused.
2007	The last major structures, including the Dome and roller coaster, were demolished.	Show transferred to no stated venue.

The Loss

The closure removed more than individual rides. It broke the compact relationship between coach parties, ferries, arcades, cafés, summer crowds and the seafront’s inexpensive forms of entertainment. Rio’s family later remembered Folkestone as exceptionally busy in the years of the Rotunda and the ferries.

In the Bear file, this is the decisive collapse. His show depended on people already being there, noise already happening and somebody else having printed a programme. Once the rides and crowds had gone, the same entrance looked less like showmanship and more like a Bear waiting beside a fence.
