Bear Activity Exchange information

At a glance. The exchange does not use advertising, analytics or tracking cookies. A voice report is sent only when you record it, listen back and choose SEND REPORT TO ARCHIVE.

Voice reports

The recorder starts only after you tick the recording agreement, press START RECORDING and grant microphone permission in your browser.

Each recording stops automatically after 8 seconds. The recorder requests mono audio, boosts quiet speech and prepares a plain telephone-quality WAV file of at most 128,044 bytes. Extra files and embedded metadata are rejected. Until you send it, the recording remains only in the open page for playback or download and disappears when cleared or when the page is closed unless you download it.

Verification before sending

Cloudflare Turnstile checks submissions for automated abuse. The server verifies each check, limits repeated requests and accepts only one short audio recording. Cloudflare processes verification and connection data, including your IP address. The recording is sent only when you choose Send.

Browser storage

The exchange can optionally use local browser storage to remember volume, mute state, call progress and file references on this device. Select CONTINUE WITHOUT STORAGE to use the exchange without saving those items.

One preference records whether local storage was allowed or declined so the exchange can respect that choice. Clear this site's stored data in your browser to remove the preference and any saved exchange information.

Written reports

EMAIL REPORT opens your email app with the activity, general area and report note filled in, addressed to reports@folkbear.uk. Nothing is sent until you press Send in your email app. The Archive receives your report and the sender details normally included by your email account. The website does not send or store the written report on a server. Unsent text remains in the open form and is lost when you leave or reload the page.

Sending recordings to the Archive

When archive delivery is available, a participant must agree before recording and then choose to send the finished recording. The server validates the file, passes it to the configured mail provider as an attachment and may retain it in a rolling Recent Activity store when that feature is enabled. Only the five newest voice reports are kept in that store for public playback; accepting a sixth removes the oldest. After the provider confirms the send, the page displays a report reference and clears its local copy. The same reference appears in the email subject, attachment filename, message header and recent-report record so a removal request can be traced.

Removal from the five-report Recent Activity list does not remove the emailed archive attachment. That copy will still exist in the destination mailbox and may be retained temporarily by the mail provider. Clearing the web page cannot delete those copies.

The Archive receives the report for preservation and possible use in the performative contexts described in the contribution conditions. Keep the report reference and quote it in any access or removal request to folkstoneware@gmail.com. The duration and file-size limits are enforced in the browser and again by the receiving service.

The intended archive and performance permissions are set out separately in the Contributor Consent & Conditions. A participant must be shown the short consent statement and actively tick it before recording or sending.
